Gifted by King Henry III to the Bishops of Carlisle in 1230, Rose Castle served for almost 800 years as a residence and fortified stronghold for 63 successive bishops. Situated near the Anglo-Scottish border, the castle stood at the heart of a contested landscape, witnessing centuries of conflict and diplomacy while also offering hospitality to distinguished visitors, including King Edward I and the poet William Wordsworth.
Today, Rose Castle remains closely connected to its setting within 60 acres of historic grounds. These include formal gardens, wildflower meadows, and open landscapes that reflect centuries of changing use and careful stewardship. The gardens are overseen by Head Gardener Janet Queen, whose work continues this long horticultural tradition.
Tours are led by a Trustee or the Owner of Rose Castle, alongside the Head Gardener, offering authoritative insight into the castle’s history, architecture, and living landscape.
