Make your way through the light filled vestibule. The original door lock, a gift to the bishop from the wealthy Clifford family in 1673, still remains.
As you step inside, a roaring fireplace welcomes you. Look up to the grand sweeping staircase, lovingly restored to its former glory. Paintings of the Bishops Thomas Smith, Edmund Law, and George Fleming hang above the staircase, a reminder of some of those illustrious residents who also stayed here.
Now it’s your turn. Create your own piece of history.
6 historic reception rooms, 15 bedrooms and 7 acres of carefully curated gardens and grounds are all yours.
Make yourself at home. This is your castle.
Attention to detail is key at Rose Castle. Real thought and love has been applied to every aspect of your stay.
Whether you’re here for a wedding, weekend escape, celebration or corporate awayday, Rose Castle offers a range of beautifully restored spaces that are all yours to use as you wish for the duration of your stay.
Just through the main entrance and beneath the grand staircase, you’ll find The Bishop’s Library. The perfect room to welcome your guests on arrival, or to spend time alone for quiet work or contemplation. Take a seat at the original Bishops desk in the reception. Your desk in your very own castle.
Just beyond the Bishop’s Library lies the most easterly room of the castle. A place to read and work in peace or gather for meetings, the room is fully equipped with AV technology. Or you may wish to host an intimate dinner.
This flexible space can be used for a range of functions from dining, parties and wedding ceremonies to board meetings and networking. During the day the room is flooded with natural light from the bay windows. At night, with the shutters closed, it becomes an intimate, cosy space.
For weddings and celebrations, set up a feast for 40 along beautifully dressed tables. For corporate events and presentations the room can be set up theatre style, and is fully equipped with AV technology. Create a sense of ambience with music playing through the Sonos speakers, or invite a live band to entertain your guests.
With its high ceilings, stone fireplace and window overlooking the beautiful Pettingers Garden, this light-filled space can fulfil a variety of functions. A large round table can seat up to 12 for dining or meetings. Or the table can be removed and replaced with more comfortable furniture for a break out area or sitting room.
As you ascend our oak staircase, on the first floor of the castle, you’ll find the State Drawing Room. Often the favourite room of the house. With its 19th Century meticulously hand-painted Chinoiserie wall coverings, this is the most exquisite space in the castle and certain to delight your guests. A grand space, that’s warm and welcoming. The hand carved fireplaces have been recommissioned for wood log fires, and with views across the grounds from the large bay windows, you’ll feel a real peace here. A sense of being at one with yourself, with family and friends, with the surroundings. You’re home, after all, in your very own castle.
At the other end of The State Drawing Room, step into The Lumley Room, a cosy, informal space for your guests to relax. A large screen TV can be utilised for any guests wanting to catch up on the news, sport or favourite shows. A perfect retreat for the kids, so the adults can have some time together in The State Drawing Room next door. Netflix, PlayStation, anything you need, we can make it happen. For corporate events, the space is ideal for a break out room during the day or as a more intimate space to socialise in the evening around the working stone fireplace.
Wedding ceremonies can be held here, with seating for 80 guests and capacity for an extra 20 if needed. Make your way to the altar accompanied by music from the grand piano.
If you’re here for a corporate event, weekend escape or family occasion, you can opt for use of the Chapel during your stay. Take a moment for contemplation or reflection, or play a tune on the piano. Should you want to use the space for a meeting, presentation, or quiet work, there’s full AV and broadband in here too. Consider the space yours for the duration of your stay.

Go ahead, help yourself. Head to the Boost Room for a much needed snack or late night pick-me-up. With a small kitchen space including fridge and induction hob, you can even cook up a quick meal. Ideal if you’re wanting to give the kids an early dinner, so that you can relax and enjoy your own evening meal.
The single rooms are accessible from two of the larger bedrooms through adjoining doors, offering exclusive space for families, guests with carers, and brides-to-be needing separate space for hair and make-up.
The bedrooms have been elegantly decorated in a classical style, each with its own distinct personality. From majestic to quirky, there’s something to suit every member of your party. Expect magnificent views, soft lighting, quality sheets, luxury toiletries. Wrap yourself up in your dressing gown. Make yourself at home. It’s your space and time.
Each room tells the story of one of the Bishops of Carlisle who resided here at Rose Castle. So you’ll be in good company.
