Hadrian’s Wall & Carlisle Heritage Tour

Explore the frontier of the Roman Empire, uncovering the archaeology, culture, and stories of Hadrian’s Wall and Carlisle on a carefully curated educational journey

Something similar to this: Embark on a 3-night journey through northern England, where history and landscape come alive.

Constructed under Emperor Hadrian beginning in AD 122, Hadrian’s Wall stands as one of the most extraordinary achievements of Roman engineering in Britain. Stretching 73 miles from the Tyne in the east to the Solway Firth in the west, it once marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire, serving both as a strategic defense against northern tribes and a powerful symbol of imperial authority. With its forts, milecastles, and watchtowers, the Wall provides a fascinating insight into the organization, logistics, and daily life of Roman Britain.

At its north-western terminus lies Carlisle, a city whose history is as layered as the landscape itself. Originally the Roman settlement of Luguvalium, Carlisle was integral to the Empire’s frontier, closely connected to the Wall’s fortifications. In later centuries, it became a focal point in the tumultuous Anglo-Scottish borderlands, shaped by the raids and resilience of the Border Reivers.
